Open Question: Take the patient or play golf?
You’re an average surgeon in private practice making about $300k/year. Today, any income you make from taking another patient will be taxed at 33% by the federal government. Fair is fair, right?
Under Obama’s planned rollback of the 2001 tax cuts, you will be taxed 40%. And he also wants to impose payroll taxes (15%), which boosts your federal tax obligation to 55%. That doesn’t include state taxes, of course.
So instead of keeping 2/3 of what you earn from that next surgery, you would give up more than half to the federal government. Would you take the patient or play some golf?
Do you think the shortage of qualified surgeons will be helped or hurt by this tax policy?
Inappropriatus: I don’t think that patients are well served by being sent to more inexperienced surgeons because their tax rates are lower. Of course I also don’t think the tax code is to be used to arbitrarily tear down successful individuals, nor do I think *any* “market management” is proper.
Sahara: OK, never mind the golf. What if it was “spend time with the grandkids” instead?
