First the domain name: blind9golf.com brings to mind the idea of a group of blind people playing golf and the Benny Hill type of mayhem that one might expect to ensue. Open Question: If a good player on a bad team, such as Sundin, has no apparent desire to play for a winning team…(cont)?
what does that say about him? Is he simply happy to remain in the same city that he likes, without having to move anywhere, and having the security of a No-Movement Clause?
As for the franchise, do you really want players whose ultimate goal is not to win the Cup, especially if they’re in a leadership role for the team, like captain? Personally, I would want players who would do anything to win the Cup and are not just happy to play out the season and miss the playoffs. I have a lot more respect for a player who jumps at the chance to win the Cup, instead of just miss the playoffs and hit the golf course.
If you were the GM of a contender, would you rather have a hungry player like Hossa, who doesn’t want to sign in Atlanta because they’re not dedicated to winning, or would you rather have a potentially heart broken guy like Sundin, who doesn’t want to leave Toronto, but might be pressured into leaving by the franchise and media?
Bob- Isn’t it more of a bidding war if all the teams know if he’s available and they all make bids for him? For example, last year everyone knew Forsberg was available, so the offers were driven so high that Nashville ended up paying a ridiculous price for his services. Compare that deal to others where not all the teams knew about the trading of an impact player- Thornton, Luongo. Typically, when a star player is available, almost every GM makes a call to at least inquire about him.
So, I see no point in what the Leafs are trying to do, if this is indeed their strategy. They would be better off treating this like the Thrasers are with Hossa and inviting all teams to go ahead and make offers.
tom- I’m not criticising Sundin’s decision at all. I can see he created a situation for himself with the kind of security he wanted and he has every right to exercise his no trade clause, BUT I’m just wondering how everyone feels about his #1 priority NOT being to win the Cup. Doesn’t it disturb Leafs fans that their captain isn’t hungry to win his first career cup. Many hockey players would kill for a chance to join a contending team to make a run for the Cup. A player like Ray Bourque could have refused to go to Colorado, but he wanted to win the Cup at the end of his career. Why is Sundin not as hungry to raise the Cup before his career ends?
