FAP694: How your personal brand affects your scholarship search Listen now: Student Financial Aid News + Chronicle: Yielding to pressure from the White House, Democratic leaders in Congress have grudgingly agreed to slash domestic spending for 2008, shaving hundreds of millions of dollars from proposals they had made earlier to finance federal student aid and academic research, among other programs. + The maximum Pell Grant, which is now $4,310, would be trimmed to $4,241, although the actual award would rise to $4,731 once funds from a student-aid bill enacted in September are included. That measure, known as a budget-reconciliation bill, provided enough money for a $490 increase to the maximum contained in the new spending bill for 2008. + Meanwhile, spending on the Pell Grant program would be trimmed by $69-million. Many higher-education lobbyists were relieved that the cuts were not deeper, but they worried about what might happen in five years, when the mandatory money runs out. + The bottom line is that we do get an increase in Pell, said Cynthia A. Littlefield, director of federal relations for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. But thats cautioned with the fact that it might not be the case long-term. + NASFAA: Albert L. Lord, chairman of student-loan giant SLM Corp., commonly known as Sallie Mae, sold 1.2 million shares of the company, or more than 90% of his stock in the company, reports The Wall Street Journal. Friday, the company said the sale was required under Mr. Lords borrowing arrangements, suggesting Mr. Lord had borrowed against his stockholdings and faced a margin call as the value of his holdings declined. Sallie Mae executives had been forbidden to trade in company stock since March, when the company began merger discussions with a group led by the private-equity firm J.C. Flowers Co. That prohibition expired Friday, Sallie Mae said, after chances for a deal appeared to have vanished. Sallie Maes business has come under pressure after Congress agreed to cut subsidies for student-loan providers. Its shares have fallen more than 40% since the beginning of the year. Mr. Lord also became chief executive officer of Sallie Mae. As chairman, he had taken the principal executive role at Sallie Mae on Nov. 26 but didnt formally take the CEO title until Friday. He had served as Sallie Maes chief executive from 1997 to 2005, the company said.
